What a Game!

Heckuva battle, wasn't it?  Great show by the Ravens and Niners - and a great Super Squares too.  After paying the winners, we'll be able to donate over $2,500 to fight lung cancer.
Thank you for your generosity.  It matters.
That last-second safety the Ravens granted a $10 blitz prize to Kujo.

Final Score = Final Winners

The final score makes $250 winners of ...Betsy C  /  Martin S / Tracy B-K.

Third Quarter Winners

David Akers' second crack at a field goal tilted the third quarter score and made Q3 winners at $150 of...Morrissey / AJ / Buttsie.

Jacoby Jolt!

Jacoby Jones' electrifying TD kick return triggers a $10 blitz prize for Erdy.
Then the power goes out, which is worth $10 to .....Erdy again!
Talking baby commercial! - that's $10 for Glenda.

And the kick is....MONEY!

The 49er FG on the final play of Q2 made $150 winners of these players -- Eamon SF / AJ / Simmet / K Concannon.

Fake is a FAIL!

Evelyn's gotta be thrilled with that failed fake FG.  A big Niners fan, she's $10 richer as the blitz prize winner for that piece of Ravens idiocy.
Kaepernick's air mail INT means $10 for Tim K.

A Generous Soul

Just heard from a Q1 winner that they're going to donate their winnings!  That's above and beyond. THANK YOU!

Fuuummmmble!

The Niner fumble triggers a $10 blitz prize for the Christiansen family.

First Quarter Results!

Congratulations to these Squares players for winning $150 with the first quarter results.

. Omar S / Lucy B / Betsy C.

Last Minute Grid: Matt Stover

Here's the last-minute, game-day Super Squares grid.
As you can see, the open squares are numbered.
You can still join up!  Just email me at ksmithfagan@gmail.com.
You will be assigned one of the open squares randomly.
Enjoy the game!
Thanks for supporting this important effort.

P.S.  This grid is named in honor of former Ravens kicker Matt Stover, whose primary attribute, in my view, was being a Browns player first.

Third Grid: Woody Peoples

Here is the third full grid, meaning we have surpassed 300 squares sold.  Yay!  Good luck to the players and thanks for supporting the effort.
By the way, Jerry Rice and Joe Montana were above average, but I think we can all agree that the greatest 49er ever was....Woody Peoples.

Second Grid: Ozzie Newsome

This grid is named in honor of the Cleveland Browns great Ozzie Newsome, who was forcibly relocated to Baltimore when the Ravens betrayed my hometown.  Nonetheless, I needed somebody from the Ravens to name this grid, and he is the least awful choice.

Good luck to all!

Another Nice Note from a Squares Player

A nice post-it affixed to the Squares check.

"Kevin - In loving memory of Barb - I miss her more as time goes by."

I know that feeling.

My Favorite Niner: Woody Peoples

I loved football as a kid.  I knew all the players and I had a ton of football cards.  I had like six copies of this guy Rockne Freitas from the Lions, and I was always trying to pawn him off on my friends in trades, but nobody else wanted multiple copies of Rockne Freitas either.

In the early 70s, the Niners had a good identity.  John Brodie was a top QB.  They had two Washingtons (Vic and Gene, not to be confused with the other Gene Washington from the Vikings), and an electric kick returner named Bruce Taylor (a BU grad no less).

But my favorite guy, based solely on his name, was a lineman named Woody Peoples.  Even now his name makes me smile.  Not sure why.  It's just fantastic.  Woody Peoples.

Nice Note from Super Squares Player

Got this nice note and thought I'd share it.

"Dude - We are so glad to be part of this great cause.  It is the only Super Bowl thing we participate in!  Next month marks 10 years since we lost my dad to lung cancer.

If this effort helps even one kid avoid the loss we feel every day - that's awesome!   - The Dudes"

First Grid Full - John Brodie

Our first grid is complete!  Named in honor of the great 49er QB John Brodie.  Good luck, players, and spread the word!

Super Squares 2013 - Niners/Ravens!

Please join me in fighting lung cancer, which claimed my mom's life in 2008, through the supremely fun "Super Squares" effort.  Since 2008 we've raised close to $10,000!

If you're new to Super Squares, it goes like this: you can win prize $$ depending on the Super Bowl score after each of the game's four quarters.

WHAT DOES IT COST?
To play, it's $20 for one square, three for $50, seven for $100. Free bonus square for using paypal when you participate at $50 and $100.

HOW DO YOU WIN MONEY?
Each square on the grid gives you ownership of a possible game score. Prizes are awarded at the end of every quarter. So at halftime if it's San Francisco Niners 27, Baltimore Ravens 16, the squareholder with SF 7 Bal 6 wins prize money.

Payouts are $150 for three quarters, and $250 for the final score. Your numbers will be generated at random. The grids will be posted here at the blog as they fill up. I use the website random.org to generate the numbers.

You get fresh numbers every quarter, too - so if your first quarter numbers are terrible (9,9), fear not because you get a fresh set for Q2 and Q3 and Q4. The grid shows it all.

No matter the score, you'll always have a chance to win with "blitz prizes" -- $10 awards that will be drawn on the spot when unusual events unfold during the game. We'll draw a winner when:

- there's an interception or a lost fumble, a two-point conversion, a missed extra point or a safety:
- a coach throws his "Challenge" flag;
- Lennay Kekua gets mentioned;
- there's a new commercial featuring a talking baby (thank you, Betsy); or
- any other loopy thing we think up between now and gametime - suggestions welcome!

HOW DO YOU PAY?
Please use paypal if you can because it makes things so much easier. Players at $50 and $100 even get a FREE BONUS SQUARE by using paypal. If you pay by check, please write the check to me (notate ALA in the subject line) and send it to me at 2513 Key West Way, Sacramento, CA, 95826.

When you log in to paypal, use the Send Money tab then select "Famly and Friends" and "Gift." That way paypal will not charge any fee on the transaction. Yay! The paypal destination email is ksmithfagan@gmail.com.

HOW DOES YOUR MONEY SUPPORT THE AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION?
Every penny from Super Squares goes to the cause (after paying the prize winners). I deliver the Super Squares funds to the ALA/Chicago branch.

Thanks for playing! And thank you for fighting lung cancer in my mom's memory.
